What Not to Store in a Storage Unit

Self storage units are great for storing most of your personal belongings or household items. Looking to vacate your home whilst undergoing some renovations? Our climate controlled storage units are a great solution. Needing to store your boat whilst you’re away on a vacation? No problem, our boat and vehicle storage units are the perfect solution.

However, if you were hoping to get those fuel cans or paint tins out of the garage or backyard shed, you’ll have to find an alternative solution than self storage. Whilst Out of Space storage units can store many things, there are a few things that just can’t be stored.

Flammable Materials

When it comes to storing items in a self storage unit, there are a few things that aren’t permitted. One of these is not storing flammable materials. Hazardous materials can’t be stored in a storage unit because they pose a higher risk for fire damage. Some common combustible or hazardous materials include:

  • petrol/gasoline
  • paint tins or paint thinner
  • medical supplies
  • solvents / toxic chemicals

If you’re needing to find a new home for these items, other than the garage, ask a relative or friend if they can be stored in their shed instead or potentially consider safely disposing of the items entirely if they’re no longer needed.

Perishable Items

Certain items are not permitted for storage in a self storage unit including perishable goods, like rotting food. These include all food or similar items that is potentially hazardous or dangerous to store long-term because it spoils quickly. These items can’t be stored in a storage unit because they are at risk for contaminating other items inside the unit. Some common perishable goods include:

  • canned food
  • fresh food
  • fresh flowers
  • pet food

If you need to store these items, reach out to a relative or friend and ask if they can store them in their refrigerator or pantry.

Suspicious Items

One of the items that cannot be stored in a self storage unit is any material considered to be suspicious. Any item deemed to have been discarded by a criminal, which includes old pieces of furniture, should not be stored in a self storage unit under any circumstances. This includes an illegal items or stolen items, of which are banned to be stored in a storage unit. Don’t put these items in a storage unit:

  • illegal items
  • weapons
  • illegal substances
  • stolen items

Living Things

When storing items in a self storage unit, there are certain items that are not permitted for storage. One of these is not storing certain living things in the storage unit. This includes living animals like dogs or turtles, as well as plants like flowers and fruit trees. If you need to store these items in the self storage unit, then reach out to a relative or friend to see if they can house them for you instead.
