STORAGE & PACKING TIPS
PREPARATION IS KEY
When it comes to packing and storing your valuables, we know the best tips and tricks.
-
Appliances
To ensure the longevity of your appliances please ensure that items such as fridges, freezers and other white goods are thoroughly clean and dry before storing. When packing place a deodoriser inside fridges and freezers to maintain freshness and doors should be slightly ajar.
-
Furniture
When packing furniture items such as cupboards, wardrobes and drawers placing mothballs or similar products will help to maintain their condition. Where possible remove all contents within the item and remove the legs from bed bases, tableetc. to avoid any damage.
-
Dishes & Glassware
Protect fragile items by wrapping them individually in packing paper (newsprint can be messy and possibly stain). Nest cups and bowls, stand plates, saucers, platters, casseroles on their edges. Fill any gaps in the cartons with packing eg: scrunched paper or linen, and label all cartons containing fragile items.
-
Mirrors, Windows & Paintings
Wrap fragile items with packing and place a layer inside the bottom and top of your storage cartons. This will keep your fragile items well protected and prevent them from moving around in the cartons whilst in transit. Label all cartons containing fragile items and avoid storing heavy items on the top of these cartons.
-
Business Storage
When storing important business documents such as tax records, business receipts and other paperwork it is best practice to correctly file and most importantly, to label these documents! Classic cardboard and plastic storage containers are most convenient and popular as it optimises storage space.
-
Clothing & Personal
Protect your clothes from premature damage by following these simple tips. Prior to packing it is best to wash and thoroughly dry your clothing items (damp clothes can lead to mold). For short-term storage you can vacuum seal your personal items and longer storage periods it is best to use clip on plastic containers. For added protection use cedar balls to prevent moths, mildew and musty odours.
-
Tools & Miscellaneous
To store your work tools for work or home renovations, clean out dirt and debris to prevent rusting and damage. For power tools remember to oil and lubricate moving parts. Repair any loose handles or parts, to ensure optimal function and safety. For other miscellaneous items such as paint, metallic goods or combustible items please contact our friendly team for the best advice.
-
TVs & Electrical Equipment
When packing electrical items such as computers and televisions, the original boxes are ideal to repack in as they leave minimal room for moving around. However wrapping items individually in bubble wrap, packing them in cartons, and sealing the top will offer protection for your electrical items – remember to fill any gaps in the cartons!
-
Vehicles & Other Machinery
When storing machinery please ensure that all vehicles are cleaned, as bird droppings and water stains left on the car can damage the paintwork. Also where possible (for smaller vehicles) place a protective cover for added protection from the elements. The last step is to top up oil if storing your vehicle in excess of a month, and also to inflate your tyres to the recommended pressure.
